Vy Eats in Playa Del Carmen

Vy actually ate a lot of buffets in Mexico, and sadly does not have many pictures of them because, well, she was too busy eating.

We stayed 4 nights at the Barcelo Maya Caribe, and while my room smelled a bit moldy, we really enjoyed our stay there.

Our room.

First meal at the resort. Yes, those are probably chicken nuggets up top. Don't ask.

The following pictures are from our second night of dinner, when the resort had Italian.

Top right is a chorizo in cheese concoction that was seriously so good. You can bet I didn't touch the beans. The others look like vegetables and stuff.
Crostinis and spreads.
Proteins! Squid, mahi mahi, scallops, salmon, mussels.
Meats, carbs, and ratatouille.
Antipasti.
Various cold salads.
Displays for the grill area.
Warm proteins.
Carbs! Lasagna, cannelloni, tortellini, agnolotti.
 Desserts.
More desserts.
More still.
Yup. Desserts.
Cookies.
Fruit salad.
Chocolate fountain! There was a white chocolate one as well.
Sushi? With colored rice?
 Chilled seafood.
Fruits! My favorite.
And yes, out of all of that, this was my first plate. Buffets are so wasted on me.

But that was a typical dinner spread. SO. MUCH. FOOD. Breakfast was great too. I never made it to lunch. Each pool area also had an all day buffet with fare that also changed with mealtimes.

Additionally, the resort had on-site restaurants where you would typically pick four courses: appetizer, soup or salad, entree, dessert. We received two vouchers for dinners, and had to book them our first night. We took what were available, which ended up being Tokyo and Marenostrum.

My first thought when I looked into the restaurant, "Oh sht, it's teppanyaki."
Because egg rolls are too rare and pricey, they can only give you one-third of one.
Tuna nigiri - what is this shade of tuna?! Also, the rice was gummy.
Salmon sashimi saved by the excessive soy sace.
Miso soup - giant bowl. Also had glass noodles. Not sure why.
Salad with ginger dressing - it looked way overdressed, but it wasn't. I actually liked this. Suprisingly.
Tai's swordfish. Dry. Dry. So dry.
My surf and turf - the beef was pretty good. Lobster was so overdone.
 Fried bananas.
Mango in sticky rice. Not at all what mango in sticky rice actually is. This was more like a mango mousse cake. I don't even know.

Suffice to say, although I was full, Tai and I went to the buffet after.

Prosciutto and cantaloupe - what's with the tiny bits of prosciutto?
Seafood crepe - not really what they were expecting. Almost like a soft egg roll.
Ceviche - so good. It was like a fresh salsa with seafood thrown in.
Cream of oyster soup - meh.
Seafood bouillabaisse -  pretty good but salty.
Harry's lobster thermidor - pretty good.
Tai and Jessica both got the prawns.
My salmon - also decent, but that rice was no bueno.

Jessica's apple pie.
Harry and Tai got Bavarian cream with strawberries.
My panna cotta - too firm.

Better than Tokyo at least. Hah.

Mexico was a lot of fun. Relaxing. Mindless. The people are very nice, but they do definitely see you as dollar signs. And you'd think things would be cheap, but their souvenirs can get kind of expensive.

BONUS:

 Tough life.
Super clear water in the cenote.
ATVing.
Don't even need to say anything.

Driving an amphibious buggy.
In caves.
Paddle rafting.
River swimming.
 Ziplining.
Which also included a water slide.
That we were not prepared for.

Bowling at the resort.

Is it considered double fisting if the drinks are in cup holders?

I'd show pictures of airport food, but none of it was at all interesting. Til next time, Mexico!
